As a manager of digital marketing you will be responsible for spear heading the entire digital marketing wing of the company. You may also have to manage a team of people who will be ready to execute specific digital marketing actions. Digital marketing is most effective when all the components of digital marketing are used in such a way that they complement each other. This is also called Integrated Digital Marketing. If the company is large enough, the job title can be VP of Digital Marketing where several managers report to the VP. Such jobs are coming up fast and can be highly lucrative.
Now your job would be to find a service/ product to help them with whichever one of these problems they may be having. I’ve learned a lot about online marketing on my own own/forums/blogs/working on my own projects, but l’ve learned A LOT more by working at companies with established online marketing programs, that provide paid training, and working on teams. I think the average person getting started, unless they are the lemonade-stand type of kid their entire life, will learn a lot better taking a entry-level gig at a good digital marketing agency, rather than work on their own business from scratch. It’s high pressure, but you’ll learn the ropes a lot quicker and have the benefit from a steady paycheck if you have bills (not everyone can live in their mom’s basement). Then once you have a year or two under your belt, if you desire you can jump ship and apply that knowledge to your own business.
Trying multiple marketing methods and only putting limited input into each will only bring frustration. Instead, focus all your energy on one or two marketing approaches. Master them and make sure you have exhausted their capabilities before moving on or adding a new approach to your armory. Don’t keep dipping your fingers in and out of a bucketful of ideas hoping that one will suddenly come to fruition.
Make sure that you understand all of the potential marketing opportunities on LinkedIn. All of your customer’s key employees should have complete profiles on LinkedIn. Those managers should also post articles and blog links to the site frequently. People use LinkedIn to network, find business and also look for jobs. Use your marketing knowledge to ensure that your clients have a presence on LinkedIn.
