First and foremost, when it comes to marketing anything online, it's important to understand how money is made and earned. In my phone call with Sharpe, he identified several items that were well worth mentioning. Once you understand where the money comes from and how the industry works, you can then better understand how best to position yourself and your offer so that you can reap the benefits of the making-money-while-you-sleep industry.
It is increasingly advantageous for companies to use social media platforms to connect with their customers and create these dialogues and discussions. The potential reach of social media is indicated by the fact that in 2015, each month the Facebook app had more than 126 million average unique users and YouTube had over 97 million average unique users.[27]
Professor Clarence Lee is an assistant professor at the Johnson Graduate School of Management, where he is a Breazzano Family Sesquicentennial Fellow. Professor Lee’s research examines the drivers behind consumer adoption, usage, and purchase dynamics of digital goods, where he models consumer behavior using Bayesian statistics, structural econometrics, and machine learning techniques. Digital products and platforms, such as the ones produced by many Silicon Valley and NYC tech start-ups, are increasingly present in almost all consumer interactions. In such settings, understanding consumer choice and the dynamics of engagement and usage become critically important in order to acquire, serve, and retain consumers. He currently teaches Digital Marketing and Data Analytics & Modeling at both the Ithaca and Cornell Tech campuses.
The first component of Google's trust has to do with age. Age is more than a number. But it's not just the age when you first registered your website. The indexed age has to do with two factors: i) the date that Google originally found your website, and; ii) what happened between the time that Google found your website and the present moment in time.
When writing this guide, we reached out to the marketer community to collect case studies and learnings about creative marketing strategies. Most of these examples are included throughout the guide, but some didn’t quite fit. So we included those loose ends here, from the perspective of four awesome marketers. What better way to wrap up this guide than with you, our community?
You never know when the breakthrough will come, it could be next week, it might even be tomorrow, or it could take six more months. If things are getting on top of you then take a step back from your business and re-think your strategy. Ask yourself, “Am I focusing my energy, time and investment on areas conducive to leading me to my goal?” “Are there things I am avoiding, ignoring or only doing half heartedly that could better position me for success?”
Marketing is getting more and more difficult, as consumers grow increasingly wary of being "marketed to." Stories have a way of cutting through the clutter and helping to create an emotional investment in your business or product. Being able to envision and articulate the story behind your brand will be a defining characteristic of successful marketers as consumers become more and more cynical.
PPC University is a totally free online learning resource created by my own company, WordStream, to help build your PPC and digital marketing skills. We have access to thousands of accounts spending billions of dollars on PPC advertising, and over the years consistently found that small to medium-size businesses struggled to manage their accounts in a way that was cost effective and earned them the best results. Three streams offer lessons for beginning to advanced users, with additional modules for social advertising.
If you received certification from one of the web’s many digital marketing certification programs, then you have plenty of fields to choose from. Digital marketing is a vast field and there are a lot of roles and responsibilities to take on. Also, this is the most flexible field to work in because one can move from one field to another fairly easily, which is quite difficult for those working in other industries. For example, a digital marketing professional can shift their focus from social media marketing to search engine optimization or email marketing. There will be plenty of opportunities to grow as a full-stack digital marketer as well.
Hi Neil. This is great info (as always!). Hey, I wanted to watch those amazing videos you linked to. I have my Flash plug-in “on” in Firefox. There is a pop-up box that keeps coming up on top of the video that asks if I want to “allow” or “deny” wistia.com to store info on my computer. Even when I click on the allow/deny options, the box stays there and I can’t watch the video. Can you (or someone else here reading the comments) suggest what I might do differently.
By using the Facebook tracking pixel or the Adwords pixel, you can help to define your audience and work to entice them to come back to your site. Let's say the didn't finish their purchase or they simply showed up and left after adding something to their shopping cart, or they filled out a lead form and disappeared, you can re-target those individuals.

Doing: When I want to improve my ability to exercise a particular skill that I know the basics of, I do it by offering it to a client for a lower cost (while explicitly explaining how much I know about it). This way I learn in a disciplined fashion (not easy to slack if there is a client watching over you) and I get paid to learn 🙂 I am actually quite busy working on this very strategy. And I follow it also for skills that I am quite good at.

Copyblogger is a content marketing company that creates content about content (so meta). Its blog provides a ton of great resources about digital marketing, and this class, "Internet Marketing for Smart People," is made up of ebooks and emailed lessons and other course materials. Copyblogger espouses four pillars of content marketing success, which it delves into over the course of this class.
One of the issues the digital marketing industry is facing is that there are sometimes no barriers to entry, meaning that anyone with a loose grasp of industry terminology can potentially get a position in a company. But as this industry matures, recruiters are becoming savvier about what differentiates a candidate that can talk the talk but could be a costly mistake for the company.
I get dozens of emails everyday, because of all the lists I’ve subscribed to. Not only do I open yours, but I click through to read the rest of your blog post. The amount of value you offer is unparalleled compared to anyone else that I’m connected with. Keep putting out high quality content. I have no doubt that your new training is top notch. I’m looking forward to checking it out.
Implement – this is where you just need to go and do it. But don’t focus on all forms of online marketing at once. Otherwise, you will be spreading yourself thin, and you’ll never become great at one thing. Instead, try to focus on one section until you feel that you are pretty good at it. For example, I got good at SEO first, then social media marketing and then content marketing. Now, I am focusing my efforts on email marketing.
Marketing requires creativity. That creativity can come in many forms. Graphic designers put together visual presentations to attract customers. Writers create content that is designed to engage the reader and keep them interested. A programmer writes code to create a web page that is easy to navigate. Regardless of your marketing role, you need to think creatively.
