Consumers seek to customize their experiences by choosing and modifying a wide assortment of information, products and services. In a generation, customers have gone from having a handful of television channel options to a digital world with more than a trillion web pages. They have been trained by their digital networks to expect more options for personal choice, and they like this. From Pandora’s personalized radio streams to Google’s search bar that anticipates search terms, consumers are drawn to increasingly customized experiences.
More than ever before, people buy from people they know and trust. Being trustworthy -- and able to convey this trait to others -- is critical to being a successful online marketer. Garish, over-the-top landing pages; blatant self-promotion on social media; and spammy, keyword-laden copy will inevitably damage or destroy your online reputation. Perhaps the best way to learn to be an internet marketer is through completing one or more of the available degrees in digital marketing. If you aren’t quite sure of your interests in marketing or are looking to learn some familiarity with the field, you might consider an associates in marketing. However, most employers will expect their internet marketers to have a bachelor’s degree in marketing, with additional coursework or experience in digital marketing. Unless brands actively engage in these conversations they lose the opportunity for helping guide their brand message and addressing customer concerns.
Unlike most offline marketing efforts, digital marketing allows marketers to see accurate results in real time. If you've ever put an advert in a newspaper, you'll know how difficult it is to estimate how many people actually flipped to that page and paid attention to your ad. There's no surefire way to know if that ad was responsible for any sales at all.
You don't have to be a rocket scientist when it comes to analytics and math. However, in order to become a five-star Internet marketer, you need to put a lot of effort in developing the right set of analytics and math skills.
